Saatva Mattress Review — Construction And Features

Saatva Mattress Construction

Saatva knows how to build a great mattress, and the meteoric rise of the company is quite a testament to this fact. Apart from innerspring mattresses, the company has also gone into memory foam mattresses with its Loom&Leaf series, and into latex foam mattresses with the Zenhaven. Both of these are doing pretty well in their respective niches as well. But I digress, let’s get back to the topic at hand – the Saatva Mattress.

The Saatva mattress utilizes an innovative coil-on-coil construction, with the innersprings covered by a pillowtop comfort layer.

Saatva Mattress Layers

Broadly speaking, the Saatva mattress has four layers. The majority of the mattress height is covered by innerspring layers, while a pillow-top forms the comfort layer. It is available in two height profile options — 11.5-inch and 14.5-inch. For both of these cases, it is the height of the base layer that changes and other layers remain constant.

  • Base Layer: The base layer of the Saatva mattress comprises of the conventional Bonnell coil used in innerspring mattresses. This layer is made from 13 gauge coils and measures 4-inch high for the 11.5-inch version, and 7-inch high for the 14.5-inch version. It has a coil-count of 416.
  • Microcoil Layer: Owing to its layer-on-layer construction, Saatva tops the base Bonnell coil layer with a layer of pocketed coils. This layer helps reduce motion transfer on the mattress and also provides increased conforming support for the sleeper. Microcoil layer on the Saatva Mattress measures 4-inches and includes 884 coils made from 14.5 gauge steel.
  • Memory Foam Layer: This layer can as easily be included within the pillow-top comfort layer, but let’s consider this its own layer for separating the innerspring layers from the pillow-top. Memory foam layer on the Saatva mattress is very thin and is intended to provide better lumbar support. While it slightly varies in height with each firmness option, it stays below one-inch height for all variants.
  • Euro-top Comfort Layer: The comfort layer of the mattress is a Eurotop. The cover for the mattress (and eurotop) is made from organic cotton and is made plush with layers of foam. It is a fairly thin layer, but it does manage to offer excellent comfort and pressure relief, which is what sets the Saatva mattress apart.

An interesting part of Saatva mattress construction is the focus on being environmentally responsible. The coils are made from recycled tempered steel, and foam used in the mattress is not treated with harmful chemicals. Additionally, the fabric used is made from organic cotton blended with hypoallergenic fibers and natural thistle takes its place as the flame retardant. Some customers erroneously refer to it as the Saatva organic mattress. While it surely does use organic components and is environmentally friendly, organic is perhaps not the best term to define an innerspring mattress.

Saatva Mattress Review — How Well Does This Mattress Perform?

Firmness And Suitability

Saatva Mattress Review - Comfort And Firmness Options

The Saatva Mattress is available in three firmness options, viz. soft, medium-firm, and firm. Or, as Saatva calls them, Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. The luxury firm model is suitable for most sleepers, and the company calls it their flagship level. Indeed, if you are average weight and don’t have any special requirements, the luxury firm option will suit you just fine.

However, if you’d like to delve into the nitty-gritty of things, the Plus Soft is best suited for average weight side sleepers, or the lower-than-average weight back sleeper. If you weigh more than 250 lbs, you are on the heavier side and the best mattress option would be firm. Keep in mind, the innersprings tend to keep things on a relatively firmer side, so if you are a side sleeper who weighs lower than average, even the plush soft option may not be as comfortable.

Does The Mattress Sleep Cool?

Thanks to the dual layers of coils, the Saatva mattress is well-ventilated and thus sleeps cool. The comfort layer is not thick enough to retain too much heat and become uncomfortable, especially with a good ventilation system in place.

How Well Does The Saatva Mattress Do With Motion Transfer?

Motion transfer, unfortunately, comes with the territory of being an innerspring mattress. Plus, the lack of a thick comfort layer made from something like memory foam means the comfort layer is not doing much by way of absorbing motion.

Even so, this Mattress does fairly well with reducing motion transfer, mostly due to the pocketed coils. If your partner moves slightly in bed, it is unlikely to cause much of a problem. However, should they get off/on the bed, you will certainly feel the mattress moving.

Is It Responsive And Bouncy Enough For Sex?

Yeah! If bounce is your thing, then that double layer of coils is exactly what you want in your bedroom.

Does The Saatva Mattress Smell?

No. While Saatva is one of the companies using the direct-to-customer model, it has stayed away from the bed in a box route. The company offers free white glove delivery across the contiguous United States. In several locations, you can also ask them to remove the previous mattress. Since the mattress is delivered in a fully inflated condition, there are very little chances of any off-gassing. Plus, the white glove delivery is an excellent touch!

What Bases Does The Saatva Mattress Support?

Saatva Mattress Review - Adjustable Bed

The Saatva mattress works with all kinds of bases, going all the way from a bed with a solid support to adjustable bases. Saatva Mattress Company also offers its own adjustable base, the Lineal, should you be interested in one.

How Is The Edge Support?

The mattress has great edge support as well as ease of movement. If you have trouble getting out of bed, the Saatva Mattress has foam-encased edges that you will love. The mattress offers freedom of movement on the top, and its edge support is strong enough to be available without any problems.

Saatva Mattress Review — Is It Worth The Money?

Saatva mattress positions itself in the domain of “affordable luxury”. The mattress uses the components and has features on offer that are often seen in higher-end luxury mattresses. That’s not to say that the Saatva is a full-fledged luxury mattress, but for the price, it comes pretty close. If you can get your hands on a Saatva mattress coupon or a discount, the value increases by several points.

Saatva Mattress Review — Support And Pressure Relief

Saatva is one of the most comfortable mattresses available in the market today. When it comes to support, Saatva banks on its coiled innersprings to quickly conform to pressure and body shape. This allows the mattress to offer excellent pressure relief, and the layers of foam work in tandem with the innerspring to offer amazing pressure relief.

Most back and stomach sleepers will not see any pressure points forming. Side sleepers will be remarkably comfortable too, although the relative firmness of the mattress means you may have to look elsewhere for the best mattress for side sleepers. The excellent comfort and pressure relief that Saatva mattress offers is one of the reasons the mattress is often recommended for painful conditions like scoliosis and arthritis.

Saatva Mattress Warranty And Trial

The mattress is available with a non-prorated warranty of 15 years. According to their policy, if the mattress is deemed defective in the first two years, they will replace it with a new mattress. For years 3-15 of the warranty, the company will repair the mattress, with the user only having to bear the transportation costs.

Keep in mind, all mattresses naturally degrade over time, and that may not essentially be covered under the warranty. It is better to clarify your concerns with the company before you purchase the mattress. Saatva also has the reputation of offering excellent customer service, and of standing behind their product. So there is a good chance that you will receive good service.

Rather than jumping straight into the purchase, you can also take advantage of Saatva’s generous free trial policy. The Saatva Mattress can be tried free for 120 days, and if you don’t find the mattress satisfactory, it can be returned to the company.
